Position Overview
Under the supervision of the Facility Maintenance Supervisor, the Utility Lead Hand performs skilled or semi-skilled specialized work in a shop or field location involving the construction, fabrication, maintenance and repairs of buildings, and provides work guidance and direction to facility maintenance workers when required. As well, the Utility Lead Hand ensures the facilities are maintained to meet established expectations and provides direction to maintenance staff on projects; ensures set-ups are completed, assists with training of staff; assists in ensuring communications are maintained between shifts. Reports all issues to the Supervisor and/or Manager of Operations.
This is a temporary term assignment (6 months in duration) to assist with various carpentry projects. Projects may include but are not limited to replacing the fieldhouse deck posts and assisting with moving structures on site. The successful candidate must have experience with, and the ability to complete contracting work such as finishing, small framing projects, drywalling, mudding, as well as a sound understanding of project management.

Job Duties and Accountabilities
- Quotes projects and meets timelines
- Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties involved in the construction, fabrication, maintenance and repair of buildings, rooms, public facilities, and buildings in the parks.
- Performs a wide variety of duties involving the use of common machine and carpentry tools such as hand and power saws, electric drills and drill presses, jointers and other types of power-driven equipment.
- Practices and maintains safe working conditions, as well as assists to ensure work procedures are safe and in accordance with WCB and fire regulations.
- Maintains contact with teams, organizations, and the general public and advises on facilities use and availability according to the booking schedule.
- Works in collaboration with the Mechanical Lead Hand on projects and general tasks.
- Monitors and records the operation of the arena refrigeration plant, checks oil levels and pressures, refrigerant temperature and pressure, cooling water and brine temperature, and be fully conversant with emergency procedures.
- Operates refrigeration equipment and maintains ice surfaces in the arena.
- Makes routine security checks as well as maintains order in the behaviour of patrons in public areas.
- Completes records and reports, as well as updates maintenance logbook.
- Ensures standard levels of building cleanliness, pool water conditions, and ice surface conditions.
- Facilitates a team approach in the delivery of maintenance functions and services.
- Assists with training employees in arena/equipment maintenance, pool operation and maintenance, building cleaning, security and safety.
- Ensure facilities are ready and available for use, in accordance with day and bookings sheets.
- Performs other maintenance tasks as required.
Qualifications
- Strong carpentry skills from drywall to finishing: cabinetry, trim, molding, etc.
- Full understanding of structural work and experience with large beams, bearing walls and working with engineers
- Previous experience in an occupation related to carpentry or wood construction, plumbing, electrical or mechanical trades.
- High school and three years experience as a Facility Maintenance Worker III, or equivalent.
- Must posses a BC Refrigeration Operators certificate or better; and Pool Operator certificate level 1 and 2.
- A valid class 5 BC drivers’ license is required.
- Recognized post secondary courses in leadership and supervision, with demonstrated previous supervisory experience.
- Working knowledge of Pro Maintainer, ComVida, Excel, Word and Outlook.
- Knowledge of building maintenance, building cleaning and building trades, including health department regulations governing the operation of public pools and rules and regulations which govern public indoor arenas, where applicable.
- Knowledge of materials, tools and equipment used in janitorial and building maintenance work, including WHMIS, and the safe handling of chemicals, corrosive materials and pressurized gases.
- Ability to coordinate multiple projects; provide accurate quotes, timelines, and resources, with the ability to meet established timelines and quotes.
- Ability to provide work guidance and direction to staff.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and responsibility while working with minimal supervision.
- Excellent interpersonal skills in communicating effectively with staff and the public.
- Ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with other departments while promoting a team approach and positive environment.
- Sufficient physical strength and stamina to perform the required duties.
- First aid/CPR certificate would be an asset.
- Experience in recreation software an asset.
NOTE: Due to WCB Regulations, steel-toed shoes are a requirement for this position.
