Position Overview
We're looking for caring and supportive individuals to help welcome and include children with additional support needs in our summer camps. As a Summer Camp Inclusion Leader, you will help children participate in camp activities, make friends, and enjoy positive social experiences. You may also assist with providing daily and weekly activities.
We have multiple positions available at both the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre and the Centennial Centre.
Employees also receive access to counselling and a staff facility pass, which provides drop-in use of the weightroom, fitness classes, skating, the pool and our 9-hole golf course.
Job Duties and Accountabilities
- Encourages each child to join activities by adjusting plans or modifying activities based on additional supports required.
- Supports children in fostering independence and building confidence.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with parents, children, colleagues and staff from the Queen Alexandra Foundation.
- Completes required written documentation of each child’s progress as part of their care plan.
- Assists instructor with developing and coordinating the weekly program schedule to promote social experiences.
- Creates and supports a safe, healthy, and welcoming environment that encourages positive communication, diversity, and learning.
- Promote and enhance creative ideas in all program areas such as arts and crafts, dramatic play, music appreciation, science and nature and sports.
- Works as part of a team with other leaders and supervisors.
- Follows all safety, privacy and emergency procedures.
- Supports smooth sign-in and sign-out and completes required documentation (attendance logs, incident reports).
- Ensures safe use of equipment and reports hazards promptly.
- Communicates respectfully, and builds positive relationships with campers, families and coworkers.
- Works indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions, including sun, heat, and light rain.
- Performs tasks of similar scope and complexity as required.
Qualifications
- Skills, knowledge, and experience with specific areas such as sports, arts, crafts, youth leadership and drama are an asset.
- Experience working with children with disabilities or additional support needs is required.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Customer service and public relation skills are required.
- Ability to work independently and as part of team.
- Ability to work outdoors in all kinds of weather including heat, wind, rain, etc.
- Minimum of 180 hours of experience working with school age children (aged 5 to 12 years).
- 20 hours of proof of workshops/training courses.
- Emergency First Aid and CPR C certificate is required
- Note: CPR B is the minimum requirement for working in childcare positions. If applying for position at WSPR outside of childcare, CPR C may be required.
Preferred certifications (assets):
- Responsible Adult certificate.
- HIGH FIVE ® certificate.
- CLASS 4* unrestricted drivers' license.
- Training in physical literacy (Physical Literacy 101, NCCP Fundamental Movement Skills, Movement Preparation).
- Early Childhood Educator or Early Childhood Educator Assistant certificate.
- Autism training.
- Crisis Prevention training.
