Position Overview
We're looking for enthusiastic, adventurous people to work in our Nature Preschool program this summer.
As a Nature Preschool Camp Leader, you will work with another staff member to plan and lead fun, outdoor activities for children ages 3 to 5. The program runs in outdoor spaces on our main site and in nearby natural areas throughout the Westshore. We are looking for people who enjoy being outside, care about the natural environment, and feel comfortable working outdoors in different weather conditions, including heat, wind, and rain.
Employees also receive access to counselling and a staff facility pass, which provides drop-in use of the weightroom, fitness classes, skating, the pool and our 9-hole golf course.
Job Duties and Accountabilities
- Leads engaging activities such as crafts, sports, games all in a natural, outdoor setting.
- Adapts to changing plans or situations, and modifies activities to suit different ages, needs and abilities.
- Ensures all children feel safe, included, and supported.
- Follows all safety, privacy and emergency procedures.
- Supports smooth sign-in and sign-out and completes required documentation (attendance logs, incident reports).
- Ensures safe use of equipment and reports hazards promptly.
- Ensures that learning spaces, equipment, materials, and supplies are set up prior to each class and properly cleaned and stored afterward.
- Communicates respectfully, and builds positive relationships with campers, families, coworkers and supervisors.
- Independently addresses minor issues or concerns and consults with the supervisor regarding any progress-related matters or recommendations.
- Works outdoors in varying weather conditions, including sun, heat, and light rain.
- Performs tasks of similar scope and complexity as required.
Qualifications
- At least 180 hours of experience working with preschool children in a licensed childcare or recreation setting (paid or volunteer) is required.
- Emergency First Aid and CPR C certificate is required
- Note: CPR B is the minimum requirement for working in childcare positions. If applying for position at WSPR outside of childcare, CPR C may be required
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Experience reducing risks for young children in an outdoor environment.
- Ability to lead activities and support groups.
- Ability to work independently and as part of team.
- Ability to walk up to 1 km per day and work outdoors in all kinds of weather including heat, wind, rain, etc.
Preferred certifications (assets):
- Early Childhood Educator (ECE), Early Childhood Educator Assistant (ECEA), or Responsible Adult certificate.
- HIGH FIVE ® certificate.
- CLASS 4* unrestricted drivers' license.
- Training in physical literacy (Physical Literacy 101, NCCP Fundamental Movement Skills, Movement Preparation)
