Position Overview
We're looking for exceptional staff to deliver a unique camp opportunity for the children of the West Shore. The Aqua Camp Leader will develop, plan and implement daily and weekly recreational activities for children 7 to 12 years of age. The leader is responsible for instruction of a daily 1-hour swim lesson along with a wide variety of water related activities incorporating: sports, games, arts, drafts, and special events. In this role, you will help children build friendships, try new things, and develop lifelong skills.
Employees also receive access to counselling and a staff facility pass, which provides drop-in use of the weightroom, fitness classes, skating, the pool and our 9-hole golf course.
Job Duties & Accountabilities
- Leads engaging activities both in the pool and outdoors.
- Plans and leads engaging swim lesson programming for a variety of ages and swim levels.
- Supervises safety of children in the water during lesson time and fun swims.
- Adapts to changing plans or situations, and modifies activities to suit different ages, needs and abilities.
- Ensures all children feel safe, included, and supported.
- Follows all safety, privacy and emergency procedures.
- Supports smooth sign-in and sign-out and completes required documentation (attendance logs, incident reports)
- Ensures safe use of equipment and reports hazards promptly.
- Communicates respectfully, and builds positive relationships with campers, families and coworkers.
- Works indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions, including sun, heat, and light rain.
- Performs tasks of similar scope and complexity as required.
Qualifications
- Skills, knowledge and experience with specific areas such as aquatics, sports and arts and crafts are required.
- Current Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor or equivalent (YMCA, or West Shore Swim Instructor) is required.
- Current Bronze Cross is required.
- Current Standard First Aid with CPR C/AED is required.
- Completion of high school diploma or related post-secondary education.
- At least 180 hours of experience working with children or youth (paid or volunteer) is required.
- Ability to be imaginative and flexible to ensure a fun environment is created for participants.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to lead activities and support groups.
- Ability to work independently and as part of team.
- Ability to work outdoors in all kinds of weather including heat, wind, rain, etc.
