Position Overview

Under the general supervision of the Parks Maintenance Supervisor, and the direction of the senior parks staff as assigned, The Parks Maintenance Worker II performs a range of semi-skilled and specialized parks maintenance duties related to the care, operation, and development of parks, sports fields, lawn bowling facilities, golf course areas, landscaped areas, trails, and other recreation spaces. The position operates and maintains parks equipment, supports turf, irrigation, mechanical, and horticultural maintenance programs, applies pesticides as authorized, assists with park infrastructure repairs, and ensures work is performed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.

Job Duties and Accountabilities

  • Performs semi-skilled and specialized manual work related to the maintenance, repair, construction, and development of parks, sports fields, landscaped areas, golf course areas, lawn bowling facilities, trails, and other municipal recreation spaces.
  • Prepare, maintain, and repair turf, grounds, and playing surfaces for scheduled sports, recreation programs, public use, and special events.
  • Operate, inspect, clean, and perform minor maintenance on parks equipment and vehicles, including push mowers, chainsaws, rototillers, triplex mowers, front-deck ride-on mowers, tractors, dump trucks, service vehicles, and related tools and machinery.
  • Maintain Park facilities and outdoor assets, including golf course areas, lawn bowling greens, sports fields, velodrome areas, trees, shrubs, greens, flower beds, waterways, service roads, walkways, signs, gates, fences, lighting, and outbuildings.
  • Ensure tools, equipment, materials, vehicles, and work sites are used, stored, and maintained safely, and observe all applicable safety precautions, procedures, and safe work practices.
  • Plant, cultivate, prune, trim, spray, fertilize, water, and maintain annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees, turf, and landscaped areas.
  • Calculate, prepare, and apply fertilizer treatments for turf, sports fields, landscaped areas, and other park assets, including determining appropriate application rates, product quantities, and coverage areas in accordance with best practices, label directions, environmental requirements, and procedures under the direction of senior parks staff as required.
  • Support landscape upgrades and renewal projects, including bed renovations, bulb and annual plantings, tree and shrub plantings, mulching, soil preparation, and general site improvements under the direction of senior parks staff as required.
  • Assist with irrigation system operation, inspection, troubleshooting, repairs, and seasonal maintenance under the direction of senior parks staff as required.
  • Identify, report, and complete routine maintenance and repairs to park infrastructure, including signs, gates, fences, pathways, service roads, lighting, outbuildings, and related amenities.
  • Apply pesticides and other turf or landscape treatments only when certified and authorized, and in accordance with label directions, municipal procedures, environmental requirements, and applicable legislation.
  • Respond to public inquiries, service requests, and operational concerns in a courteous, professional manner and refer complex or sensitive matters to a supervisor.
  • Maintain basic records related to work performed, inspections, equipment use, materials, pesticide applications, and safety checks as required.
  • Perform other related duties consistent with the position, classification, and operational requirements.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma plus a minimum of two years of related experience in parks, sports field, golf course, turf, horticulture, or landscape maintenance, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Sound knowledge of parks maintenance methods, materials, tools, equipment, and safe work practices.
  • Knowledge of turf care, horticulture, landscape maintenance, sports field preparation, basic construction, and recreation facility maintenance.
  • Ability to operate and perform routine maintenance on service vehicles, power driven equipment, hand tools, and machinery commonly used in parks operations.
  • Good oral and written communication skills, including the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Strong customer service skills and the ability to respond professionally to public inquiries and service requests.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Physical ability to perform heavy manual outdoor work in a variety of weather conditions.
  • A valid Class 5 BC Driver’s license is required.
  • A valid Pesticide Applicator Certificate is required.
  • First Aid/CPR certificate is considered an asset.
